Media Notes

In Minneapolis, Judd Zulgad reports Sunday's Brewers-Red Sox game on TBS was "blacked out on Comcast" in the Minneapolis-St. Paul market. Comcast officials said that they were "'contractually obligated to black out the game' because the cable system also serves several towns in western Wisconsin and under TBS' deal, the Brewers' local television rights holder had to be protected in those markets." Zulgad: "It is ridiculous that a game involving two out-of-state teams gets blacked out" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 5/23).

BIONIC BALLPARKS: The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Darren Everson reports MLBAM since '06 has "quietly spent approximately $4[M] installing sensor cameras in [MLB] stadiums that can track and record the trajectory of every pitch." The Pitch f/x system this season "became operational" in all 30 ballparks. Sportvision Inc., the company that helped develop the system, earlier this month in S.F. hosted a Pitch f/x summit to discuss "how to improve the system and how to interpret its results" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 5/23).

UNDER FIRE: In San Diego, Jay Posner writes there were comments in the Petco Park press box and on the radio that Channel 4 San Diego "erred by not airing even one replay" of Padres P Chris Young having his nose broken after getting hit in the face by a batted ball from Cardinals 1B Albert Pujols. But Channel 4 Director Tom Ceterski said, "I don't regret anything. I truly think I did the right thing. ... I would say (to critics), 'What would you do if you saw a sheet of blood and didn't know how he was?'" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/23).

NOTES: In N.Y., Phil Mushnick writes ESPN analyst Joe Morgan for Sunday's Mets-Yankees game "seemed downright delusional." Mushnick writes ESPN has "made both Monday Night Football and Sunday Night Baseball insufferable. ESPN has become the Sewing Channel, top heavy with buttons and bows, but without needle and thread" (N.Y. POST, 5/23)....In Toronto, Chris Zelkovich reports Heat radio play-by-play announcer Mike Inglis and TNT's Matt Devlin "appear to have the early lead" to replace Raptors TV play-by-play announcer Chuck Swirsky (TORONTO STAR, 5/23)....Versus will debut a 60-second spot promoting its June 1 WEC event during its coverage Saturday night of Penguins-Red Wings Stanley Cup Finals Game One (THE DAILY).
