O.J. Mayo, BDA Sports Sever Ties Amid NBPA, NCAA Investigations

Mayo Severs Ties With BDA Sports
The relationship between former USC G O.J. Mayo and BDA Sports agent Calvin Andrews has ended, according to Darren Rovell of CNBC.com. Andrews Thursday said in a statement, "Due to the overwhelming intensity of recent allegations regarding the recruitment of O.J. Mayo, we feel that our representation of him is a distraction for he and his family at this time. ... We will request that the [NBPA] waive the standard 15-day cooling off period enabling O.J. to sign with new representation immediately." Sources said that Mayo soon will "interview agents," and names "rumored to be in the mix" are ASM Sports' Andy Miller, CAA's Leon Rose and LRMR CEO Maverick Carter. NBPA General Counsel Gary Hall earlier Thursday had "recused himself from leading the investigation into Mayo and [BDA] after CNBC learned that Hall had at one time worked for BDA" (CNBC.com, 5/22). YAHOO SPORTS' Wojnarowski & Wetzel noted after Mayo files paperwork saying that he has fired BDA, NBPA rules "prohibit him from signing with another agent for 15 days." But sources said that Mayo before leaving for next week's Orlando pre-draft camp will "select a new agent." Sources also said that Mayo's mother, Alisha, and Mayo's former high school basketball coach, Dwayne Barnes, "wanted [Mayo] to fire BDA." Wojnarowski & Wetzel reported that both Alisha Mayo and Barnes are "encouraging Mayo to hire" Miller, whose clients include Celtics F Kevin Garnett and Pistons G Chauncey Billups. But Mayo Wednesday met with Greentree Mortgage broker William Wesley, who has a "close relationship with Rose." Wesley: "We did not talk about Leon or anything like that. I wouldn't care who he went with. Our relationship is just friendly. As far as I know, he's under contract with BDA" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 5/22). Alisha Mayo and family attorney Mike Woelfel for now will "address the day-to-day issues" (ESPN.com, 5/23).
