MLB To Test Instant Replay In Fall League, May Implement In '09

Solomon Says MLB Does Not Have Timetable
For Implementation Of Instant Replay
MLB is "making tentative plans to experiment with instant replay in the Arizona Fall League" this season, according to an MLB source cited by Jayson Stark of ESPN.com. If the trial "proves practical and successful, MLB then is likely to continue the experiment next March during the World Baseball Classic and spring training games." Stark noted if "no insurmountable problems arise," MLB could begin using instant replay as early as the '09 season. It is still to be determined whether calls would be reviewed by an official in each stadium, like the NFL does, or in MLB's N.Y. offices, resembling the NHL's replay system. MLB GMs in November voted 25-5 in favor of trying "replay on boundary calls -- whether possible homers are fair or foul, if balls actually clear fences, whether there's fan interference" (ESPN.com, 5/22). A MLB source said that an instant replay system "could be in place in time for the upcoming postseason," but the source added that a "more likely scenario is that replay will be a reality" for the '09 season. In Chicago, Phil Rogers reports it is "unclear whether teams would be given the right to challenge calls, as they are in the NFL, or if the umpiring crew would have to order a replay on a contested call" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 5/23). MLB Exec VP/Baseball Operations Jimmie Lee Solomon said that MLB "continues to examine instant replay but doesn't have a timetable for a plan." Solomon: "The times are such that our fans are used to seeing all the high technology, and they're used to seeing the other sports that use these systems to make determinations, and the fans are clamoring for all the sports to look at that." The use of instant replay in MLB games "likely would need the approval of the [MLBPA] and the World Umpires Association" (USA TODAY, 5/23).
