League Notes

In Detroit, Bob Wojnowski writes of the Pistons and Red Wings Saturday and Monday both hosting home playoff games, "Whom do we blame for this? I'm looking at NHL commissioner Gary Bettman." The NBA schedule "was set before" the Red Wings defeated the Stars to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals, so "why couldn't Bettman avoid a conflict in a vital TV market? He says he couldn't, that the NHL had contractual obligations and the schedule basically was set a year ago. I'm amazed the league didn't have more flexibility and creativity to get it done" (DETROIT NEWS, 5/22).

Some Feel Ogilvie Has Skills, Acumen To One
Day To Become PGA Tour Commissioner
JOE COOL: In Milwaukee, Dan Manoyan wrote PGA Tour member Joe Ogilvie's "communication skills and business acumen are so highly thought of that he has been mentioned as a possible successor" to PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem, whose contract expires in 2012. Ogilvie: "It's nice that people are saying (that he might be the next commissioner), but I've got one major weakness. I have zero operating experience. The Tour is a $2[B] company so why would you hire someone who's never run a company before and never had a job other than playing golf? If I was on the board that does the hiring, I wouldn't even look at me. ... I wouldn't rule out that some day I would work for the PGA Tour and maybe lead into the top spot someday, but there is no chance I would replace Tim" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 5/21).

MIXED MARTIAL SIGNALS: In Las Vegas, Ed Graney writes there might come a time when UFC co-Owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta tell UFC President Dana White to "give in a bit and relinquish some power when negotiating with a CBS." But for now, "you can bet many mainstream fans who happen past" EliteXC's May 31 show on CBS will "think they're watching UFC." The "same goes for any Affliction or HDNet fights. UFC is still the windshield and all others mere bugs on it for now" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 5/22).
