Mets’ Randolph Criticizes SNY's Coverage Of Managerial Style

Randolph Upset With SNY's
Portrayal Of Managerial Style
Mets manager Willie Randolph criticized the Mets-owned SportsNet N.Y. for “framing an incomplete portrait” of his managerial style, and he wondered if the “color of his skin contributed to the perception that he’s a manager who doesn’t have ample control of his team," according to Ian O’Connor of the Bergen RECORD. Randolph said of SNY, “They're the artists, I’m the canvas. They paint the picture the way they want to. They want to show me when somebody gives up a home run or somebody makes an error, so they want to see me (using profanity)." Randolph: "Why (isn’t) SNY shooting me when I’m ready to go down the dugout clapping my hands and patting guys on the butt, schooling them during the game? I’m on the top step every game. … Why don’t you show that side of me so people can say, ‘Wow, jeez, Willie’s fiery?’ … You watch any manager in baseball, you see him look like a bump on the log sitting there. They don’t move, they don’t talk. I’m as animated and as demonstrative and as involved and as intense as any manager in baseball.” Randolph also “wanted to know why the traits so often admired in the calm, cool and collected likes of [Dodgers manager] Joe Torre are portrayed as flaws” in him. Randolph: “Is it racial? Huh? It smells a little bit” (Bergen RECORD, 5/19).

SNY RESPONDS: On Long Island, Neil Best writes SNY “was baffled and unamused by Randolph’s broadside, believing it has shown him in animated moments.” SNY Senior Dir of Communications Andrew Fegyveresi: “We believe that our Mets telecasts are the best in the business. Our coverage is insightful, entertaining and most importantly, objective” (NEWSDAY, 5/20).
