Speculation Grows That Magowan Will Step Down Tomorrow

Magowan Remains Mum At MLB Meetings On
Whether He Is Stepping Down In Near Future
Rumors continued to swirl at yesterday's MLB meetings in Milwaukee that Giants Managing General Partner Peter Magowan is planning to step down from his club leadership post tomorrow, consistent with initial press reports in the S.F. Chronicle. Magowan, a member of the MLB Exec Council, hastily left that committee meeting roughly 40 minutes before its conclusion yesterday in Milwaukee, stopping only briefly to answer "No" to reporters' questions of whether he had made a decision about his future with the club, and whether this would be last appearance at an MLB executive council meeting. MLB Commissioner Bud Selig said there was no significance to the early departure and that he had not been notified of any change to Magowan's status with the Giants. "He had some place to go, and he told me that yesterday. He had a board meeting or something," Selig said. That board meeting is believed to be a planned Friday session with Giants ownership in which the Chronicle reported Magowan, 66, will step down. Speaking earlier yesterday in Milwaukee, Giants Exec VP & COO Larry Baer declined to specifically address the mounting reports about Magowan. "We're standing by our original statement from last week (indicating Magowan was pondering retirement, but offered no specific timetable). Time to time, Peter has considered retirement. We have maybe a half-dozen (club ownership) meetings per year, and I don't want to characterize this one. As of now, there's no announcement. This is something Peter is weighing." A sale of Magowan's interest in the club, estimated at about 10% and $70M in value, would need to be approved by at least three-fourths of MLB owners.
