NBA's Silver Discusses TV Ratings, Youth Basketball Initiative

Silver Discusses State Of NBA In
Q&A With Wall Street Journal
NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver took part in a Q&A with the WALL STREET JOURNAL's Joseph De Avila as part of the paper's "Long Toss" feature. Silver said HD has "already made a huge impact in NBA viewing," as the league's ratings for games on ESPN HD are 43% higher than in standard definition homes. Silver said the league streaming games online "may be counter-intuitive, but despite making our games available on multiple platforms, our ratings for the regular season were up approximately 15% across all networks. And for the playoffs we are up 20%." FIBA last month announced a new set of int'l rules, which Silver said will help "bring the world together under a set of common rules. ... It will both enable both international players to be better prepared to play in the NBA, and it will also help U.S.-born players be better able to compete in international competition." Silver said he is "not sure what will be up and running by next year" in regards to the NBA's joint youth basketball efforts with the NCAA, but "one of the things we are focused on is a youth basketball Web site that will allow a common place for kids, coaches, administrators throughout the country to come and find out where the best programs are in their communities." Silver added the NBA and NCAA are "probably not going to be going into the [summer] academy business. We are not discouraging others. That may make sense in certain cases. I don't think the NBA and NCAA will be going into the academy business" (WSJ.com, 5/15).
