EliteXC To Expand Female Fighter Base, Include Bout On CBS Show

EliteXC President Gary Shaw Tuesday during a teleconference announced that the MMA promotion intends to "expand its stable of female competitors for future EliteXC events, as well as add a 140-pound title as early as September," according to SHERDOG.com. Shaw added that more women's divisions will be added "if suitable athletes can be found to fill them," and he also "mentioned the possibility of an all-female event." Shaw during the teleconference focused primarily on undefeated fighter Gina Carano, who on May 31 will face Kaitlin Young on CBS as part of the first primetime network TV MMA card. UFC President Dana White previously has said that UFC has "no intentions to promote a female bout in the future," and SHERDOG.com wrote EliteXC's "aggressive approach with the softer sex could pull it away from the pack." Meanwhile, Burger King and Rockstar energy drink, both of which previously have sponsored UFC fights, are among the main sponsors for the May 31 CBS event (SHERDOG.com, 5/14).

ESPN's "E:60" Profiles Female
MMA Fighter Gina Carano
DESERVING STAR? Carano was profiled on ESPN’s "E:60" Tuesday night, and ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap said, "The question is: to what degree is she just another pretty face, to what degree does she really deserve this shot based on her fighting abilities." Carano earns up to $35,000 per fight, is featured in EA's "Command & Conquer" videogame and stars on NBC's "American Gladiators." Schaap: "The sexuality and charisma that are at the front of her marketing assault have also attracted criticism from other female MMA fighters." MMA fighter Tara LaRosa: "I do find the skimpy, sexual side to be disrespectful to the sport. I really was hoping that MMA would not go in that direction" ("E:60," ESPN, 5/13).
