Mike Tyson Documentary To Be Shown At Cannes Film Festival

Documentary On Tyson To
Screen At Cannes Film Festival
Mike Tyson and his “new advisers” this week will go to the Cannes Film Festival in France where a documentary about his life, “Tyson,” will make its premiere, according to Tim Arango in a front-page story in Sunday’s N.Y. TIMES Arts & Leisure section. The film, directed by James Toback, includes interviews of Tyson from last year “while he was in rehab, with fight clips,” and has made Tyson “reconsider a life that shames him.” Tyson: “I look at it now, and I’m embarrassed I did it.” The movie is central to plans “to reintroduce" Tyson and will go with “a memoir that is still in its early stages” that Tyson is writing with author Larry Sloman. Toback feels the documentary, which is expected to be released in theaters this fall, will allow people to see Tyson, “known for his bursts of viciousness in the ring, ... in a more sympathetic context.” Toback: “I just showed it to Warren [Beatty] and Annette [Bening], and it’s the first time I’ve ever seen [Beatty] choke up over a movie” (N.Y. TIMES, 5/11).

NEW PROJECTS: Tyson’s key new advisors are Harlan Werner, who has worked with Muhammad Ali on licensing and marketing, and Damon Bingham, Ali’s godson. Both were involved in the film and have producer credits. Werner also adds that he "has comic book and video-game deals in the works” for Tyson. Werner: “We’ve got to make the guy money. That’s our job. Our plan is to do high-profile projects and associate with companies who understand that this guy has generated billions around the world in ticket sales, pay-per-view and DVD sales” (N.Y. TIMES, 5/11).
