Glendale Failed To Recoup Spend For Super Bowl XLII

Study Shows Glendale Did Not Recoup
Cost Of Hosting Super Bowl XLII
Glendale, Arizona, "did not recoup what it spent" to host Super Bowl XLII in February, according to a study cited by Carrie Watters of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. The study showed that visitors to Glendale "added an estimated $1.2[M] to the city's tax coffers," $2.2M below the $3.4M Glendale spent "preparing for and hosting" the game. The study also concluded that "just 5[%] of an estimated 123,500 out-of-town visitors stayed in Glendale and not yet enough retail and entertainment options existed to satisfy demand." But Glendale City Councilman David Goulet "foresees a return on investment over time as the game bolstered the city's image as a destination" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 5/9).

INDY: In Indianapolis, Brendan O'Shaughnessy noted the NFL awarded Super Bowl XLV in 2011, for which Indianapolis bid, to Arlington, Texas. But organizers of Indianapolis' bid to host Super Bowl XLVI in 2012 "believe the city's odds are better this time around because money will play less of a role in a competition between equal stadiums." Central Indiana Corporate Partnership CEO Mark Miles, who is leading Indianapolis' bid effort, said, "There's a level playing field this year as far as seats available. Now it's about how to build on last year's bid and make it more compelling to the league and the community." Eli Lilly & Co. CEO John Lechleiter and Langham Logistics President Cathy Langham for the current bid "again led an effort to secure $25[M] in fundraising commitments to cover the costs of hosting the swanky events and parties associated with an event that is as much about business as football" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 5/10).

HOUSTON: In Houston, John McClain reported while Indianapolis "is considered the favorite" to host Super Bowl XLVI, a contingent led by Texans Owner Bob McNair also is bidding to secure rights for the game to be played in Reliant Stadium. McNair said that he "doesn't think it's a big deal that Houston is trying to get the Super Bowl one year after" Arlington will play host. McNair: "I don't think having back-to-back Super Bowls in Texas is an issue." And though NFL owners next week are scheduled only to vote on the 2012 game, McNair is "hoping the owners might award two cities Super Bowls" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 5/11).
