NFL, NFLPA Hold First Official Meeting In Labor Talks

NFLPA, NFL Hold First Official Meeting
Regarding Current CBA Situation
The NFL and NFLPA had their first official meeting in the latest round of labor talks last Thursday in N.Y., with the deadline for either side opting out of the current CBA less than six months away. The league has complained vociferously that the CBA is economically ruinous for the owners, but management did not make a formal proposal at the meeting, said NFLPA Exec Dir Gene Upshaw. The players, meanwhile, have disputed the owners’ claims of economic hardship and are happy with the current CBA. Upshaw has posted a short article on the union's Web site today noting the meeting and that little was accomplished. He still fully expects the league to opt out by the November 8 deadline. That would make 2010 the last year of the deal and a season without a salary cap. For the first time, the NFL’s new outside labor counsel, Bob Batterman, who advised the NHL during its lockout, was present, Upshaw said. There have been several informal meetings in the past. Also attending for the league, Upshaw said, was NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell; outside legal counsel Gregg Levy; Exec VP & CAO Jeff Pash; Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen; Panthers Owner Jerry Richardson; NFL Management Council Senior VP/Labor Relations Peter Ruocco and NFL Exec VP & CFO Anthony Noto. The NFLPA contingent included Upshaw, General Counsel Richard Berthelsen, and outside legal counsel Jeff Kessler.
