Santa Clara Says City Can Build On Park's Lot For 49ers Stadium

Officials Say Santa Clara Can Use Amusement
Park's Parking Lot For 49ers Stadium
City of Santa Clara officials said that the city "doesn't need Great America's approval" to build a 49ers stadium on the theme park's parking lot, suggesting that they "could ignore any potential veto from the theme park's owner by providing more parking," according to Theriault & Swift of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. In a letter sent last month to Cedar Fair President & CEO Richard Kinzel, whose company operates Great America, Santa Clara City Manager Jennifer Sparacino said that according to Cedar Fair's lease, the city "has the right to develop the theme park's parking lots, provided any lost parking spaces are replaced." Theriault & Swift note in the case of the proposed stadium, that "could mean building a parking structure on Great America's main lot." The "hitch is who would pay for it." Sparacino said that the city would need the 49ers to "come up with some money ... because Santa Clara is committed to spending $42[M] on a parking structure that's already part of the proposal." Theriault & Swift note any additional costs would "add to a $51[M] funding gap identified in January between what Santa Clara is willing to invest in the project and what the 49ers say they need to get it built." Cedar Fair CFO Peter Crage, when asked if the city and the 49ers "might move forward without the consent of Cedar Fair," said that "nobody wanted to see that happen, but didn't deny the possibility." A 49ers spokesperson Thursday declined to comment on the latest development but said that talks are "continuing with Cedar Fair" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 5/9).
