MLB To Raise Breast Cancer Awareness With Mother's Day Program

Several MLBers To Use Pink Bats As Part Of
Sunday's Breast Cancer Awareness Promotion
All MLB teams hosting a game this Sunday will celebrate Mother's Day with special in-park programs and a pink theme as part of the league's "Going to Bat Against Breast Cancer" initiative in support of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. MLB Charities has committed $50,000 to the organization through the program. Many MLBers will use pink Louisville Slugger bats during Sunday games, and select game-used and team-autographed bats will be auctioned on MLB.com at a later date, with net proceeds benefiting Komen for the Cure. Additionally, players will wear pink wristbands and pink titanium necklaces from MLB licensee Phiten, and pink ribbons will adorn player and on-field personnel uniforms. Pink ribbon logos also will be placed on the bases and commemorative home plates, and managers will use pink dugout lineup cards (MLB). Yankees SS Derek Jeter and 3B Alex Rodriguez were on ABC's "GMA" Thursday morning to promote the initiative. Rodriguez said, “Anytime you can give back and bring awareness to people, it’s a good thing” ("GMA," ABC, 5/8).

HAIRY SITUATION: In Chicago, Mark Gonzales reported White Sox CF Nick Swisher, P Bobby Jenks, C Toby Hall and P John Danks had their "facial hair painted pink for Mother's Day and to raise awareness of breast cancer." Hall said that some White Sox players also will "color their facial hair blue next month for Father's Day and to raise awareness of prostate cancer" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 5/8).

BOUNCING OFF THE WALLS: The AFL will honor mothers at all games this weekend with a ceremonial pink ball used during first- and second-half kickoffs and during a special coin toss presentation. The ball will feature a pink "S" stripe, laces and crosshairs. Autographed pink balls will be auctioned off on the league's official Web site, with some proceeds going to local charities (AFL).
