Safeco Field's Nintendo Fan Network Provides Nice Distraction

Mariners Offering Nintendo Fan
Network To Fans At Safeco Field |
Mariners fans at Safeco Field for the second consecutive season can pay $5 to download software onto their Nintendo DS Lite, connecting them to the ballpark's Nintendo Fan Network, according to the SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER’s Jon Naito, who reviews the system. The network on Tuesday “proved to be a nice distraction on a night in which the Mariners drew their smallest-ever crowd to Safeco” and lost 10-1 to the Rangers. The system is “user-friendly and easy enough for the biggest technophobe to use smoothly.” Fans need to locate one of the two kiosks located on the main concourse, and an attendant “downloads the software (a process that took less than a minute) onto the system.” After registering by entering a user name, password, and seat number, fans are "immediately connected to the network’s wireless system.” The DS Lite is “slightly larger than a PDA, smaller than your average paperback book.” The graphics are “clean and easy to read, and there is a directional pad in addition to a touch screen and stylus.” Systems are available to rent for $10 at Safeco Field. Once connected to the network, fans can access MLB standings, a live game tracker for any MLB game and the sites of MLB teams. There also are “mini-games that include a word puzzle and baseball trivia.” Naito writes of the feature that allows fans to order food from the DS Lite, “The idea is convenience, but the menu, at a park known for its diverse concessions, was surprisingly bland.” Naito concludes overall, the network “offered a nice distraction from those inevitable ballpark lulls,” but it “didn’t necessarily add to my experience, especially with someone else in tow” (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 5/8).
