TSU Indicates Willingness To Invest, Share Dynamo Stadium

Dynamo May Partner With Texas
Southern Univ. For New Stadium
Texas Southern Univ. (TSU) AD Charles McClelland said that the school is “willing to invest in the construction” of the MLS Dynamo’s 22,000-seat stadium, “in exchange for rights to use it,” according to Fallas & Murphy of the HOUSTON CHRONICLE. McClelland: “My understanding of the proposal is that the Houston Dynamo and [TSU] would share the use of the stadium, including some signage, so it would be the home of [TSU] athletics and football.” McClelland indicated that the proposal gives TSU “equal access but also responsibilities regarding operating costs.” McClelland declined to discuss the size or range of the financial commitment, but said that he is “confident the range that has been discussed is ‘within the capability of the university.’” McClelland "plans to meet" with Dynamo President & GM Oliver Luck before week’s end. Dynamo ownership has said that while it is “committed to a downtown location, if a deal cannot be struck soon, it will look for options in the suburbs.” The proposed stadium would be about two miles from TSU’s current home football field (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 5/8).

KICKING IN: In a separate piece, the HOUSTON CHRONICLE’s Bernardo Fallas writes if the Dynamo “know what is good for them, they will try their best to make McClelland their new best friend.” McClelland and TSU “could provide the much-needed punch to get a deal done with the city of Houston.” And “don’t think for a second the city isn’t crossing its fingers for TSU to join in the negotiations. Between a year’s worth of talks, studies and meetings -- and the $15[M] it spent to purchase land just east of downtown -- the city needs its investment to count for something” (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 5/8).
