Cherry Donating Fee From
ESPN To Humane Society
In L.A., Dawn Chmielewski reports Disney's FY Q2 profit increased 22%, as revenue from cable nets ESPN and Disney Channel "rose 9% from a year earlier to $2.1[B], and profit increased 14% to $1.1[B]" (L.A. TIMES, 5/7). CABLEFAX DAILY notes ESPN delivered "higher affil [revenue] due to rate increases and subscriber growth, plus increased ad [revenue] from higher rates" (CABLEFAX DAILY, 5/7). Meanwhile, the WALL STREET JOURNAL's Silva & Currie look to extrapolate the full brand value of Disney, writing under the subhead, "Sum Of Walt Disney's Parts Looks Some 20% Higher When You Do The Math." Disney's cable nets, including ESPN, are worth $31B on "Viacom's multiple of eight times Ebitda." But ESPN "dominates a growing audience that still watches sports live, a huge attraction for advertisers in the age of digital-video recorders and TiVos." Silva & Currie: "Put the cable-networks' earnings at 10 times Ebitda ... and ESPN is worth an extra $10[B]" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 5/7).

CHERRY ON TOP: The CBC analyst Don Cherry, who will appear on ESPN's NHL coverage through the remainder of the Stanley Cup playoffs, will "donate his ESPN fee to the Humane Society" (ESPN.com, 5/6).

CLARIFICATION: The L.A. TIMES' “For The Record” section today references Larry Stewart’s review of NBC’s Kentucky Derby coverage and notes the “article said that viewers at home watching NBC were left wondering as the network, seemingly caught off guard, failed to provide many details of what had happened to Eight Belles" after she had broken down. NBC advises that it "had planned what to do in the event there was an accident, and did provide details, including the euthanization of the horse" (L.A. TIMES, 5/7).
