Toronto Globe & Mail Signs National Newspaper Deal With VANOC

VANOC has signed a deal with the Toronto Globe & Mail, making it the Official National Newspaper for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic & Paralympic Games. The deal provides the Globe & Mail with the exclusive Games rights in the national newspaper publisher category, and it also provides the Globe & Mail with sponsorship rights to the Canadian Olympic & Paralympic teams for this summer's Beijing Olympics and the 2010 Vancouver and 2012 London Games. The newspaper will offer VANOC enhanced national advertising through allocation of print and online features related to the 2010 Games (VANOC). While neither party would release the financial details of the agreement, VANOC CEO John Furlong said that the "value of the 'cash and kind' package falls within the organization's supplier category range" of C$3-$15M. VANOC in April signed a "similar deal" with CanWest Publishing for rights in the regional newspaper category (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 5/3). In Vancouver, Jeff Lee wrote the deal is a "coup for VANOC, which will add" the Globe & Mail's 2.76 million readers to Canwest's 4.1 million, giving VANOC the "ability to reach a majority of newspaper readers across the country." Globe & Mail Publisher Phillip Crawley said that the deal will help the newspaper "improve its western coverage and boost revenues for CTVglobemedia, which also owns CTV," the Canadian broadcast rights holder for the 2010 and 2012 Olympics (VANCOUVER SUN, 5/3).
