Insight Sports Leading Canadian Sponsor Search For Bills
Toronto-based sports media group Insight Sports has been asked to find "Canadian sponsors for the Bills' games" in Toronto, according to Brian Milner of the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL. The Bills' sponsorship is a "first for the company, which is best known for its digital TV specialty channels devoted to fishing and soccer." Insight CEO Kevin Albrecht said that the Bills "needed someone who knows the market well." Milner writes "few know the landscape better than Albrecht, who turned IMG Canada into this country's leading sports marketer and once represented" athletes including Coyotes Managing Partner & coach Wayne Gretzky and PGA Tour member Mike Weir. Albrecht: "Our model is what ESPN has created. It's a great model for broadcasters. And I think we can do it in this marketplace." Milner notes Insight has "obtained the rights to tournaments and events showcasing curling and other popular sports and has moved into hot new ones, such as video gaming, whose audience is entirely online." Insight also runs Gretzky's official Web site and "hopes to do the same for other big-name athletes, something it sees as a potentially lucrative earnings generator." Insight is "spreading its wings in the international market, where it has applied for a licence to operate its profitable World Fishing Network [WFN] in Britain." Albrecht will not discuss financials for the privately-held company, but industry sources said that revenue "probably doesn't exceed [C$30-40M]" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 5/2).
