New QB Ryan Will Not Be Prime Player In Falcons' Ad Campaign

Falcons Say Ryan Will Not Be Focal
Point Of Team's Marketing Efforts
Falcons first-round draft pick QB Matt Ryan will "not be a prime player in an advertising campaign planned ... to try to rebuild the team's sagging season-ticket base," according to Tim Tucker of the ATLANTA CONSTITUTION. Falcons President Rich McKay: "I don't think we're going to sit there and try to harp on one player. It doesn't mean (Ryan) won't have some appearances or that you won't see him in the community, but I don't think he'll be the focus of our campaign. ... We will focus on the fact there is a unique opportunity for fans to buy pretty good seats in the [Georgia] Dome at a low price." Tucker notes a large portion of the team's marketing previously was centered around suspended QB Michael Vick, but McKay said, "There was an awful lot of focus on Michael that wasn't driven by us -- focus that was just a natural byproduct of the player he was. It wasn't by design, but by demand." McKay said that the Falcons' ad campaign, which will "roll out over the next couple of weeks," will "stress the availability of season tickets because in recent years 'the market became accustomed' to them being sold out." McKay added that the campaign will "emphasize the importance of creating a home-field advantage, Blank's commitment to winning and the fresh start of a new coach, new GM and new players." Activation will include billboards, TV, radio, print and online (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 5/1).

THE NEXT CHAPTER: SI's Peter King writes Ryan will "have to convince a locker room and a city that he's the right man to succeed Vick." WGCL-CBS sports anchor Gil Tyree: "Michael Vick had a hold over this city that no athlete will ever have again. Everybody wonders, 'Is Mike coming back?' ... He's a messiah here." Blank has "yet to state publicly that Vick won't play for the Falcons again." However, he said last weekend, "We have an obligation to move forward. That chapter needs to be closed" (SI, 5/5 issue).
