Phillies Roll Out Green Program To Cover All Park Energy Use
The Phillies yesterday debuted a new environmental strategy called Red Goes Green, a program that will see the team "buy enough renewable energy ... to cover all of its energy use at Citizens Bank Park this year," according to Sandy Bauers of the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER. The 20 million kilowatt hours, which will be used to "heat the fryers, light the field, power the scoreboard and more," will make the Phillies the "third-largest purchaser of green power" in Philadelphia. The team also plans "myriad smaller greenings," including switching to biodegradable cups and plates, converting the fry oil to biodiesel and recycling the stadium's cans and bottles. MLB Exec VP/Administration John McHale Jr. said that the Phillies had gone "far beyond what his office imagined when it challenged the league's teams in March to green their operations." Bauers reports the Phillies are leading MLB "on the renewable energy front," and the club has become the first MLB team "to join the EPA's 'Green Power Partnership,' which encourages groups to buy green power." The Phillies are one of only 13 groups in Pennsylvania to "purchase the renewable energy equivalent to 100[%] of the energy it uses." To commemorate the program, the team wore green caps during last night's home game against the Padres (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 5/1).
