Who's On First? Cuban Attends Cubs Game As Guest Of Tribune Co.

Cuban Takes In Cubs Game
With Tribune Co. Execs
Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban last night attended the Brewers-Cubs game at Wrigley Field and sat with Tribune Co. execs "in their premium seats," according to Chris De Luca of the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES. Cuban is among at least six groups "ready to make a formal bid" to acquire the Cubs, and "those with insight into the proposed sale indicate Cuban is no longer the dark horse he once was considered." Tribune Co. Chair Sam Zell "almost certainly will insist on getting the highest bid for his team, and Cuban appears poised to spend what it takes." Insiders believe that Cuban "could put together a package with more available assets quicker" than the group led by Madison Dearborn Partners Chair & CEO John Canning Jr., which was "thought to be the leading contender" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 5/1). Cuban: "I’m here to learn more and get a better feel for what might happen. They haven’t officially put the deal book out yet, but I’m certainly interested” (ESPN, 4/30).

TIME IS ON HIS SIDE: In Chicago, Dave van Dyck writes Cuban's "timing is curious because this is about the point when ownership said that it would open its financial books to prospective buyers" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 5/1). Also in Chicago, Jay Mariotti notes Cuban sat with Tribune Broadcasting President Ed Wilson, among others. Mariotti: "You don't park an attention magnet like Cuban by the on-deck circle, then formally show him on the telecast as play-by-play man Len Kasper comments, if you don't want speculation. Didn't Zell say last week that the team's financial books finally would be made available about now?" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 5/1).

ON THE MARK: ESPN's Steve Phillips said of Cuban, "He understands the business of professional sports and of entertainment and I think that can go a long way in benefitting baseball. He would be different, though. Baseball is kind of an antiquated ownership group. ... He could be a breath of fresh air, but he also could scare some of the owners” (ESPN, 4/30). About 83% of respondents in a ChicagoTribune.com poll said that they would like to see Cuban buy the Cubs (CHICAGOTRIBUNE.com, 5/1).
