Packers' Sale of Tile, Brick Helps Fund Lambeau District Plans

Packers Discuss Development
Plans Around Lambeau Field
The Packers yesterday "provided an update of sorts ... on plans for development of land they own around Lambeau Field," according to Richard Ryman of the GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE. The team within the last year "acquired more than a dozen acres in the vicinity of the stadium," and as a result of the team's winning season in '07-08, the Packers' "brick and tile sales at Lambeau Field are nearing $1.6[M]." The Green Bay/Brown County Professional Football Stadium District in '03 began selling bricks and tiles, and money raised through the sales "supports stadium district operations." The stadium district nets "about 60[%] of sales proceeds, the rest going toward the manufacture, installation and maintenance of the bricks and tiles." Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy said that the team has had "very preliminary contacts" with the surrounding area and counties "about development around the stadium." Murphy added that it "makes sense for Lambeau Field to be included in any entertainment district plans." Murphy: "One of the key goals is if we can increase visitation to the area using Lambeau as the draw." Murphy added that the team "might study whether it would be useful to move some facilities," like the practice field which is now located across South Oneida Street, "closer to the stadium." The field "attracts hundreds of spectators during training camp." Stadium District Exec Dir Patrick Webb said that $0.05 sales tax collections, "used to partially fund the $295[M] Lambeau redevelopment project, are up about 4.5[%] so far" in '08. Webb has said that debt projections show that it "could be paid off as early as 2011, and the sales tax could be eliminated in 2014." Meanwhile, Ryman notes the district "continues to pursue an international soccer match" at Lambeau. Stadium District Program Consultant Greg Kuehl said that U.S. Soccer Federation reps are "scheduled to visit the stadium in June" (GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE, 5/1).
