RSL Will Not Receive Additional Stadium Funding From County

Salt Lake County Says It Will Not Kick In Any
More Money For RSL Soccer Stadium
Salt Lake County (UT) "won't be kicking in any more money" toward MLS Real Salt Lake's (RSL) new soccer stadium in Sandy, according to Rosemary Winters of the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. The city of Sandy has "pledged up to a $10[M] property-tax rebate for the $110[M] project," but Salt Lake City Mayor Peter Corroon has told Sandy to "count the county out." Corroon, in a letter this week to Sandy Economic Development Dir Randy Sant, said, "I don't feel that it is in the best interest of the citizens for the county to contribute more revenue to the project." The Utah state Legislature and Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. "channeled $35[M] of county hotel taxes" to the stadium project, after Corroon rejected the subsidy last year. Eric Gelfand, Senior VP/PR for RSL parent company SCP Worldwide, said, "We're working with Sandy. It's not something that we're concerned about." Gelfand noted that stadium construction is "70[%] done" and is expected to be completed in October (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 4/30). In Utah, Leigh Dethman reports RSL this month will meet with Sandy's planning commission to "present its final stadium parking plan." Sant told the Sandy City Council that negotiations between the city and RSL are "ongoing concerning city incentives such as complimentary tickets, a city suite and city promotion" (DESERET NEWS, 4/30).
