Kentucky Derby Presenting Sponsor Pulls $1M Yumfecta Prize

Yum Brands Not Offering $1M Yumfecta
Bonus At This Year's Kentucky Derby
Kentucky Derby presenting sponsor Yum Brands "won't be offering a $1[M] bonus" to the winner of this year's race based on its winning margin, according to Gregory Hall of the Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL. Yum debuted the Yumfecta bonus last year if any horse beat the 6 1/2-lengths margin of victory Barbaro had in '06, but the promo "drew lukewarm reactions from previous victors, who questioned whether any jockey should push a horse that was clearly going to win." Churchill Downs Inc. President Steve Sexton: "We felt it was worth an experiment for the one year." Sexton added that he "didn't believe there was much reaction either for or against the bonus." Sexton: "It generated a little bit of publicity, but at the end of the day we both felt that there's probably some different ideas that we can work together on to try and help promote the Derby." However, Sexton said that "none of those new promotions could be finalized in time" for this year. Hall notes Barbaro's winning margin in '06 was the "second largest margin in Derby history;" Street Sense won the '07 Derby by 2 1/4 lengths (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 4/29).
