Pro Football Writers Of America
Gives Favre Its Good Guy Award
The Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) named former NFLer BRETT FAVRE as the PFWA's GOOD GUY AWARD winner (Packers). Meanwhile, Favre's appearance last Thursday on the "Late Show" earned an 8.8 HH rating, or 78,408 HHs, in the Milwaukee market on WDJT-CBS, the show's largest Milwaukee-area audience since "at least'' '94 (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 4/27).

CUTTING TIES: Portuguese soccer club Benfica F FREDDY ADU and MLS Red Bulls F JOZY ALTIDORE have left Wasserman Media Group for representation. Altidore: “I just wanted to try something new and go a different route. It's not that hey're a bad company. They're a great group of people and definitely have a bright future" (THE DAILY). Red Sox 2B DUSTIN PEDROIA has switched agents from ALAN NERO to Aces (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/27).

CASE SETTLED: Canadian Olympic snowboarder ROSS REBAGLIATI has settled a lawsuit with CTV, after Rebagliati in an '06 lawsuit claimed the net "misappropriated his character" for its Whistler TV series. Rebagliati did not reveal the settlement, but said that he "felt vindicated by the win." CTV's fictional drama series "centered around the mystery surrounding the death" of Canadian Olympic snowboarder BECK MCKAYE. Rebagliati had argued that McKaye "was based on him and that he was being portrayed in a distasteful way" (VANCOUVER SUN, 4/25).

DAN ON REAL LIFE: Pro Football HOFer DAN MARINO yesterday delivered the commencement address at the Univ. of Pittsburgh, his alma mater. Marino, in the speech, said, "If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn't lead anywhere. ... You want to look back and say, 'I was the best I could be.'" Marino during the commencement also received an honorary doctorate of broadcast journalism (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 4/28).

NAMES: Univ. of Memphis (UM) men's basketball coach JOHN CALIPARI Friday signed a five-year contract worth about $2.35M annually in base salary, and also includes a "donor-funded longevity bonus that will total $5[M]" if Calipari stays at UM though the 2012-13 season (Memphis COMMERCIAL APPEAL, 4/26)....Coyotes Managing Partner & coach WAYNE GRETZKY attended Saturday's MLS Chivas-Galaxy game at the Home Depot Center, and Gretzky said of Galaxy MF DAVID BECKHAM, "There are only a few athletes in the world who have charisma. I don't try to compare athletes. TIGER WOODS, as good as he is, and [MICHAEL] JORDAN as good as he is, they have charisma, and that's what Beckham has" (L.A. IN MEMORY: Watkins Glen Founder CAMERON ARGETSINGER, who helped "revive road racing in postwar America," died last Thursday from complications of a stroke at age 87 (N.Y. TIMES, 4/27).
