PAGE TURNER: Author ROBERT LIPSYTE appeared on Fox Business this morning to discuss his latest novel, “YELLOW FLAG.” The book follows a racing family whose son is being pushed towards a career in racing but wants to be a musician. Lipsyte: “What I found -- believe it or not -- most interesting was the business aspect of NASCAR. The idea of the blatant, wonderful commercialism, everything was kind of out front” (Fox Business, 4/25).

DANCE HALL DAYS: MLS Galaxy MF DAVID BECKHAM appeared on “Ellen” Thursday. Beckham on whether he feels pressure to increase the popularity of soccer in the U.S.: “No, because I’m still enjoying the experience of actually playing here and trying to make a difference. ... It’s succeeded already because it’s had the interest. We’ve had crowds like 68,000 fans in New York when usually there’s 15,000 fans.” Beckham presented host ELLEN DEGENERES with a pair of his customized adidas soccer cleats (“Ellen,” 4/23).

NAMES: The Florida House and Senate Thursday honored Univ. of Florida QB TIM TEBOW with resolutions, and Senate President Ken Pruitt presented him the Medallion of Excellence, which Pruitt called the "highest citizen award the body offers" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 4/25)....Three Univ. of Tennesse coaches, including women's basketball coach PAT SUMMITT, men's basketball coach BRUCE PEARL and football coach PHILLIP FULMER Thursday celebrated their seasons with Tennesse's congressional delegation (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 4/25)....Boxer FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR. will wave the green flag to start the Indy 500 on May 25 (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 4/25).

IN MEMORY: Former Boston broadcaster DON GILLIS died Wednesday at the age of 85 after suffering a series of small strokes three weeks ago. In Boston, Bob Ryan writes Gillis "ruled Boston TV sports for 21 years" before retiring in '83. Ryan: "Check that. He invented Boston TV sports in 1962 and then presided over it in the manner of a benevolent monarch. ... He really did create the evening sportscast as we know it" (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/25).
