Extra, Extra! Canwest Publishing To Sponsor Vancouver Games

Canwest Publishing has signed a sponsorship agreement with VANOC  for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Games. Canwest gains exclusive rights in the regional newspaper publisher product/service category for the 2010 Games, and for the Canadian Olympic team for this summer's Beijing Olympics, as well as the 2010 and 2012 London Games. Under the deal VANOC will gain a greater advertising reach in 10 regional newspapers, and Canwest will produce a series of information guides pertaining to the Vancouver Olympics (VANOC). In Vancouver, Jeff Lee reports the deal is worth between $3-15M. Canwest gains the rights to use the Olympic rings and "other official marks." The deal does not include the National Post, Canwest's national Canadian newspaper, nor does it include the editorial departments of the 10 newspapers. Canwest President & CEO Dennis Skulsky said that the "newsrooms will continue to practise a long-standing tradition of journalistic independence." Skulsky noted that the deal is "similar to marketing arrangements [Canwest] has with other organizations," including the Canucks and United Way. VANOC Exec VP/Marketing Dave Cobb said that they deal does "not extend advertising space" to VANOC's other corporate sponsors (VANCOUVER SUN, 4/24). Skulsky did not say when the Olympic rings logo will start appearing on the front page of the Vancouver Province as "plans are still being drawn up." VANOC officials added that a "deal for a national newspaper sponsor will likely be inked in the next few weeks and the National Post is not part of that" (Vancouver PROVINCE, 4/24).
