Reds Tap Jocketty To Assume Role
Of President Of Baseball Operations |
The Reds yesterday fired GM Wayne Krivsky and replaced him with Reds special adviser and former MLB Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty, who also will assume the role of Reds President of Baseball Operations (Reds). The Reds are 9-13 so far this season, and Reds President & CEO Bob Castellini said yesterday during a news conference, "We've had two losing seasons under our new ownership, and we started out this season poorly on a win-loss basis. That's the primary reason why we made the change." The Reds in January hired Jocketty as a special adviser to Castellini, and in Cincinnati, Shannon Russell writes, "many wondered if the writing was on the wall for a Krivsky firing." But Krivsky "didn't see it that way." Krivsky: "Walt came in -- that was a surprise -- but Walt's a good baseball guy and we've know each other a long time. I wasn't looking over my back at all. I never felt that way" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 4/24). But Krivsky added he was "completely shocked. I did not see this coming at all" (MLB.com, 4/23). In Cincinnati, Dustin Dow reports the "abrupt change was tempered by Jocketty's increased presence in the front office" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 4/24). Castellini added that "some of Krivsky's player moves that left the team paying bags of money to players no longer on the roster entered into the dismissal, too" (DAYTON DAILY NEWS, 4/24).
REAX: SPORTINGNEWS.com's Richard Justice: "Mark it on your calendar. This is going to be remembered as the day the Reds began their climb back to prominence." The Reds "desperately needed stability," and now "they've got it" with Castellini, Jocketty and manager Dusty Baker. The team in the past six years has had four GMs, four managers and two owners (SPORTINGNEWS.COM, 4/23). However, in Cincinnati, Paul Daugherty writes there is a "fine line between impatience and impetuousness. ... Successful organizations do not fire their [GM] every few years, the way this organization has." Krivsky "worked for a win-now owner when winning now was not practical." Krivsky "leaves the Reds' minor leagues in far better shape than he found them." Krivsky: "No question, patience is required. Bob will admit he's an impatient person" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 4/24). In Cincinnati, John Erardi writes Castellini "talked about the need for the organization to have patience, which is ironic since Castellini showed no patience by replacing Krivsky 21 games into the season" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 4/24). ESPN’s Peter Gammons said, “Jocketty never, ever politicked for that job and what’s curious is I really believe Krivsky has done a terrific job. He’s completely overhauled the scouting and development, cleaned all of that up.” Gammons: "When owners really start to believe their own clippings they get themselves into a lot of trouble” (“Baseball Tonight,” ESPN, 4/23).
