Extreme Makeover: Dodgers To Unveil $500M Stadium Renovation

Dodgers To Unveil Plans For
$500M Ballpark Renovation
The Dodgers today will unveil their "most extensive stadium renovation yet," a project that would "transform the area behind the outfield into an entrance promenade featuring restaurants, shops, club offices and a Dodgers museum, and add two parking garages to help replace the 2,000 spaces lost to construction," according to Shaikin & Zahniser of the L.A. TIMES. Dodgers Owner Frank McCourt and President Jamie McCourt said in a letter sent yesterday to season-ticket holders the renovations would "give the stadium a chance to remain viable." A press release from L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's office put the cost of the project, targeted for completion in 2012, at $500M. Shaikin & Zahniser note the McCourts in '04 purchased the team, Dodger Stadium and the surrounding parking lot for $430M. The Dodgers would generate additional revenue beyond game days from the "year-round use of the new facilities." However, the new garages could "present a challenge to fans who complained last year after the Dodgers altered longtime parking and traffic rules." A source said that the garages will have "tiered entrances and exits to ease traffic flow, with new underground parking complementing the garages." The plan requires City Council approval, which is "expected to be a formality" (L.A. TIMES, 4/24). Architect HKS will design the renovations. The Dallas-based firm has been working the Dodgers the past few years to re-design club seats and improve and expand concession spaces (Don Muret, SportsBusiness Journal). In L.A., Doug Padilla writes the privately financed project is "easily the most significant" of the recent offseason improvements to Dodger Stadium. The renovation project's aim is to "keep Dodger Stadium as modern as possible." The new Dodger Stadium entryway, "similar to the center-field entry area" at Turner Field, is expected to "mimic Universal Studio's CityWalk, but on a smaller scale" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 4/24).
