PIRATES STRUGGLING AT GATE: In Pittsburgh, Dejan Kovacevic reports the Pirates through eight home games at PNC Park are averaging 14,766 in paid attendance, last in MLB. Last night's Marlins-Pirates game drew 10,185 fans, and the paid crowd for Monday's Marlins-Pirates game was 8,413, the third lowest in the ballpark's eight-year history. However, the club is "optimistic it can match" its '07 average of 22,141. Pirates President Frank Coonelly: "Attendance over the first few games in April is never a reliable gauge of what overall attendance will be. We have sold more tickets than at this point last season" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 4/23). Meanwhile, as of Sunday, the Yankees have drawn an average attendance of 50,587 for nine games at Yankee Stadium, and the Mets have drawn an average of 49,632 through nine games at Shea Stadium (N.Y. POST, 4/20).
IN A FLASH: In St. Petersburg, Damian Cristodero reports movie producer Oren Koules' OK Hockey group "could have control of the Lightning by early June. ... if everything goes as planned." OK Hockey has raised about $100M of the $200M it will pay Palace Sports & Entertainment (PSE) for the club. Under a new arrangement, Galatioto Sports Partners (GSP) is willing to "put in slightly less" than $50M and PSE "will hold an interest-bearing note on the rest." When the deal closes, PSE will get about $150M up front, and it will "wait for the credit market to ease so GSP can find financing for OK Hockey to pay off the note" (ST. PETERSBURG TIMES, 4/23).
