CFL Commish's Handling Of NFL In Toronto Will Define Tenure

Cohon's Handling Of NFL In Toronto
Will Help Determine His Legacy
CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon's legacy "will be determined by how he deals" with the NFL moving into Toronto, according to David Naylor of the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL. Cohon "chooses his words carefully" when discussing the NFL in part because there is "not a clear consensus in the CFL about how to address it." Cohon: "I've ebbed and flowed on how intense I think it's happening. But what you have to do is be cognizant of the potential and that's why I'm not jumping into a deal [with the NFL] without thinking of all the permutations and variables. ... What I'm focusing on is how do I strengthen the business of our league without jeopardizing the authenticity and traditions of our league?" Naylor reports Cohon is "strategically positioning the CFL as delivering one thing that the NFL ... cannot: football as part of Canadiana." Naylor notes that concept "comes across prominently in the league's new promotional video," titled "This Is Our League." Cohon is beginning the second year of a five-year contract and has "many things on [his] agenda," including improving officiating, helping teams planning stadium renovations and "driving revenues that can improve the league's business model." It is a "lot to weigh for [Cohon], who admits to not being an avid CFL fan before taking the job last spring and who didn't truly grasp the manner in which the league matters to Canadians before attending his first Grey Cup last November." Cohon: "I didn't understand how passionate Canadians are about this" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 4/23).
