Dubious Number: Some Question Beckham's $250M Deal With Galaxy

Some Question Worth Of Beckham's $250M Deal
MLS Galaxy MF David Beckham's five-year deal signed in January '07 for at least $250M always was a "projection, and a dubious one," according to Carl Bialik of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. Three "industry experts" who projected the deal were never named, and union documents put Beckham's base MLS salary at just $5.5M. While Beckham's marketability remains strong, it is "jeopardized by his disappointing debut" with the Galaxy last season, in which he made just nine regular-season appearances. Galaxy President & GM Alexi Lalas said that Beckham is "on pace to make $250[M] on the deal." Lalas: "Beckham has been incredible business for the Galaxy and for himself." Bonham Group VP Mark Friedrich: "The general opinion is he is at least on track." Beckham's U.S. spokesperson Glenn Lehrman noted Beckham has signed new endorsements with Giorgio Armani, Sharpie and supplement company GO3 since coming to the Galaxy, but he "declined to comment on [Beckham's] earnings." Lehrman: "Is he on pace? Some of the anecdotal evidence you might see would suggest that." Lehrman also questioned where the $250M figure originated, saying, "It didn't come from our camp." Lalas indicated the Galaxy did not come up with the figure and said, "If it was a number we didn't agree with, we would have corrected it." AEG VP/Communications Michael Roth, whose company owns the Galaxy, called the $250M "the best estimate made jointly by the organizations after consulting with each other and various marketing and sponsorship experts" (WSJ.com, 4/22).
