The People's Champ: Presidential Candidates Appear On WWE

Watch Presidential Candidates'
Messages To WWE Fans
With the key Pennsylvania presidential primary today, both Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, as well as presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, appeared on WWE’s “Monday Night Raw” on USA Network last night and gave taped campaign messages tailored to the wrestling audience. Clinton said, "This election is starting to feel a lot like `King of the Ring.' The only difference? The last man standing may just be a woman." Obama borrowed a signature catchphrase from former wrestler The Rock and said, “To the special interests who've been setting the agenda in Washington for too long and to all the forces of division and distraction that have stopped us from making progress, for the American people, I've got one question: 'Do you smell what Barack is cooking?'" McCain said, “Let me tell you: If you want to be the man, you have to beat the man. Come November, it'll be game over. And whatcha gonna do, when John McCain and all his McCainiacs run wild on you?" Also, a “match” was held between Clinton and Obama impersonators to determine the winner of the nomination, but it was interrupted by WWE wrestler Umaga ("Monday Night Raw," USA Network, 4/21). WWE VP/Corporate Communications Gary Davis said the goal of the promotion was “for the candidates to speak directly to young people and others who might not vote” (BROADCASTINGCABLE.com, 4/21). NBC’s Andrea Mitchell said the candidates “are reaching out to every voter” (“Nightly News,” NBC, 4/21).

VOTING TRENDS: Scarborough Sports Marketing recently examined political party affiliation and voting trends among sports fans. Each league/sport is indexed to 100, meaning WNBA fans' score of 150 means they are 50% more likely than the U.S. population to vote Democrat (Scarborough Sports Marketing).
