Ralph Lauren, Nike Reveal Details Of U.S. Olympic Outfits

Sketch Of Closing
Ceremony Outfit
The USOC and U.S. Olympians for this summer's Beijing games will gain "instant credibility" from the USOC's partnerships with Polo Ralph Lauren and Nike, according to Brian Gomez of the Colorado Springs GAZETTE. Nike and the USOC earlier this month extended their apparel agreement through the 2012 London Games, and Ralph Lauren recently reached a deal to outfit U.S. Olympians for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies in Beijing. USOC COO Norman Bellingham: "Walking into the Opening Ceremony with Ralph Lauren and having your athletes attired with Nike, they're a great team." While attire for the Opening Ceremony on August 8 "will remain a secret," preliminary sketches by Ralph Lauren show U.S. athletes for the Closing Ceremony on August 24 wearing "mesh, collared shirts with 'Beijing' in Chinese characters on the front, V-neck sweater vests and ties, cargo pants and casual shoes." Additionally, red, white and blue stripes run along the neck and the bottom of the vest, which features the USOC logo," and the shorts feature both the USOC and Ralph Lauren logos. Bellingham said that the idea for the Closing Ceremony attire came from "Chariots of Fire." Bellingham said of the Opening Ceremony dress: "It's classy. The arena is a place that requires an element of reverence. We want to make sure we're dressed appropriately, given how important this Opening Ceremony is for China. This is their coming-out party, and we want to make sure we're respectful of that." Meanwhile, Nike's "trademark" U.S. piece is the "Windrunner" hooded warmup suit. U.S. men's medal winners will sport blue jackets and blue shoes, while women's winners will wear red jackets and red shoes. Both men and women will wear blue pants. The jacket, worn by U.S. track and field athletes at the '84 L.A. Olympics, has the USOC's five-ringed logo and Nike swoosh on the front and on the back reads "USA" in three-inch letters. A one-and-a-half inch American flag is on the left sleeve. Also, Nike has created taekwondo and BMX shoes and equestrian boots "for the first time at the Olympics" (Colorado Springs GAZETTE, 4/20).
