MLB Attendance Notes

In San Diego, Center & Posner report the Padres' average attendance of 22,687 for six weekday games since the '08 season opener is the "lowest in the Padres' five seasons" at Petco Park. The average is down 21% from '07 and more than 25% from Petco's opening season in '04. The six weekday games have included "three of the 10 smallest crowds in Petco Park history" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 4/18).

Orioles Rank Last In AL In Average
Attendance So Far This Season
ORIOLES: In N.Y., Joe LaPointe reports the Orioles' average attendance entering Thursday night's White Sox-Orioles game was 18,349, which ranked 28th among MLB's 30 teams and last among the 14 AL teams. The Orioles in '07 ranked 23rd in MLB in average attendance, and "roughly a third" of last season's 2.16 million fans came from the team's 18 games against the Yankees or Red Sox. MLB President & COO Bob DuPuy, asked whether the Orioles have been hurt by the Nationals' presence in the region, said, "I do not think that the [Nationals have] had more than a modest or slight impact" (N.Y. TIMES, 4/18).

MARINERS: The Mariners' two game series against the Royals Monday and Tuesday featured the third- and fourth-smallest crowds in Safeco Field history. Monday’s game drew 16,751 while Tuesday’s game drew 17,137. The smallest crowd ever at Safeco Field was 15,989 against the White Sox on May 2, 2007 (SEATTLE TIMES, 4/16).

BRAVES: Tuesday night’s Braves-Marlins game at Dolphin Stadium drew 10,462 fans, despite that the win kept the Marlins at the top of the NL East. In Miami, Greg Cote wrote the Marlins have to “market to themselves now; we enter a time when interest should be coalescing and reflect in better attendance” (MIAMI HERALD, 4/16). Wednesday's Braves-Marlins game drew 10,712 fans, while Thursday's drew 11,237 (THE DAILY).
