Wheels & Deals: Petron Ad Taken Down Near Long Beach Race

In California, Paul Eakins reports an 11-story Patron Tequila banner that had been placed on the side of the Villa Riviera condo building in preparation for Sunday's Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach has been taken down. The Long Beach Prosecutor’s Office “had sent a letter Tuesday to the Villa Riviera Condominium Association informing the organization that the banner must be removed because the city hadn’t issued a permit for it.” City municipal codes state promotional banners “shall not exceed one foot of banner area for each linear foot of building street frontage and shall not exceed 100 square feet, whichever is less.” The Patron banner “clearly exceeded the 100-square-foot limit” (PRESSTELEGRAM.com, 4/17).

Verizon Wireless and Motorola this season also will sponsor the No. 9 Dodge, when driven by Chase Miller, for seven NASCAR Nationwide Series races. With the deal being for the No. 2 series, there is "no conflict with Sprint and its Sprint Cup Series" (SCENEDAILY.com, 4/16).

NOTES: Dale Earnhardt Jr. Wednesday gave a public tour of his new Whisky River bar in Charlotte. When we parted ways with Bud, it was like, 'Man, we've got to do Whisky River. It's such a cool name'" (Mult., 4/16)....Footwear company Emu Australia has signed to be the primary sponsor of the IRL Dreyer & Reinbold No. 23 car driven by Townsend Bell for potentially two races, the Milwaukee Mile on June 1 and a possible race at Surfer's Paradise (Dreyer & Reinbold). MC2 Energy Drink will sponsor the MacDonald Motorsports No. 81 Dodge driven by D.J.
