Bobcats Will Not Seek Financial Assistance From Charlotte

Bobcats Fans Want Johnson,
Jordan To Be More Visible
Bobcats Dir of Corporate Communications Michael Thompson said that team Owner Bob Johnson "definitely won't ask the city of Charlotte for financial aid to help offset his losses," according to Jefferson George of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. Thompson: "We're not going down that road at all. That's not going to happen" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 4/17). In a front-page piece, the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER's Greg Lacour writes under the header, "Not All Fans Feeling The Love. Some Say Johnson Should Be More Visible." The Bobcats yesterday ended their season with a 32-50 record, attendance that "ranks near the bottom of the NBA, and an owner who opined this week that Charlotte's business community needs to do more to support the team." Bobcats fan Kevin Carroll said in response to Johnson's comments, "I couldn't believe it. For him to blame his failure on local businesses -- it's his business. He needs to make it a success." Carroll added that it would help if Johnson and Managing Member of Basketball Operations Michael Jordan "would simply show up more," as both did for last night's Fan Appreciation Night. Lacour: "The frequent absence of Johnson and Jordan is a tender spot for many fans." The team last night gave free T-shirts to the first 10,000 fans and "offered autographed memorabilia and other items" to fans during the game. The team also discounted items in the team store up to 40%. And at the concession stands, hot dogs normally priced at $3.75 went for $2.50 and 12-ounce beers which normally sold for $6.25 went for $3 (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 4/17).

INSIDE Presence: In Charlotte, Rick Bonnell notes it was "interesting" to see Jordan sitting courtside near Johnson during last night's game against the 76ers. Jordan, "who has kept a low profile at home, usually sitting in a suite," has "made it clear in the past he wants his role to be basketball, not marketing" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 4/17). In Raleigh, Barry Saunders writes of Johnson's remarks about the Charlotte business community, "Smart move, Bobby. That'll get 'em lined up behind you. ... If Johnson knows what's good, he will mend his relationship with Charlotte's money men" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 4/17).
