Boston Marathon To Allow Corporate Ads At Start, Finish Lines

Boston Marathon To Put adidas, John
Hancock Logos At Start, Finish Lines
Under "growing pressure from corporate sponsors and event organizers, the Boston Athletic Association [BAA] is ending its 112-year tradition and will allow ads" at Monday's Boston Marathon, according to Jenn Abelson of the BOSTON GLOBE. There will be a "total of 26 spots along the route featuring the logos for longtime sponsors John Hancock Financial Services and Adidas." No additional money was paid for the ads. BAA Exec Dir Guy Morse said that "nine signs, measuring about 3 feet by 8 feet, will feature the John Hancock logo." They will "appear near the finish line, with three on the press bridge, two above the VIP grandstand area, and two on each side of the barrier at the finish line." The two clocks above the finish line also will have the Hancock logo, as well as the traditional BAA logo. Another Hancock logo will "appear on the ground near the starting line," and eight additional signs will be "placed in the warm-up area near the start line in Hopkinton." Two adidas logos "will be on signs on each side of the street at the finish." adidas also will have four signs in the warm-up area. Morse: "In the year 2008, people understand you need sponsorship at this level to compete. For the BAA to provide the level of prize money and attract the elite athletes, and for the BAA to provide all the merchandise for 7,000 volunteers, you need corporate involvement and support to do that. It was time that we could make their support a little more visible." adidas Running Communications Manager Ashley Williams: "The decision by the BAA to place our logo at the start and finish lines shows the strength of our relationship" (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/16).

RUN FOR YOUR MONEY: The BAA yesterday announced that the prize purse for Monday's race has been increased by more than 38%, jumping from $575,000 to $796,000, the largest in the history of the race. The purse is funded by John Hancock, the race's principal sponsor since '86. The men's and women's open division winners will each receive $150,000, a record amount of guaranteed prize money for individual winners from the World Marathon Majors events (BAA).
