Cowboys, AT&T In "Serious" Talks About Stadium Naming Rights

Cowboys In Stadium Naming-
Rights Talks With AT&T
The Cowboys are in "serious discussions with AT&T Corp. to name their new $1[B] stadium AT&T Field," according to Engel & Ahles of the FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM. The deal would include a media rights component that would allow the team and AT&T to "almost exclusively distribute Cowboys content on local television, radio, Internet and wireless devices." Terms of the potential deal were unavailable. A document entitled "AT&T Field Naming Sponsorship and Media Rights Agreement" indicates the deal would "prohibit any sponsorship deals with any major competitor of AT&T" and allow the team to "terminate the agreement if AT&T goes into bankruptcy." Also, AT&T could "opt out of the contract if the Jones family sells the franchise." The media-content rights would make this deal "broader than other naming-rights agreements." The team would create 10 hours of  "exclusive content that will be distributed by AT&T over the company's Internet, wireless, cable and satellite television services." Also, the Cowboys would give AT&T $1M annually to "distribute exclusive content each year." The contract would include distribution through any technology outlet created in the future. Cowboys Dir of Corporate Communications Brett Daniels said the club does not have any naming rights deal in place. AT&T spokesperson Sarah Andreani did not comment on the company's negotiations with the Cowboys, but did say that the company "is regularly approached about naming rights to the stadium" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 4/12). In Dallas, Calvin Watkins reported Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones has talked to "numerous Fortune 500 companies in the [U.S.] and overseas" about buying the naming rights, and Arlington Mayor Dr. Robert Cluck said, "I do believe AT&T is one they have talked to." But Andreani said, "We absolutely do not have a naming-rights agreement with the Cowboys" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 4/13).
