“These are the three big reasons, and it all comes because Upshaw has been way too close with Goodell and his predecessor, Paul Tagliabue. A bit more confrontation at the bargaining table would serve the players well, and the players probably need a new face to do it.”

“What I can’t imagine is why any player would want to get rid of Gene before his term is over. I think he’s been a great asset to the union.”

“Upshaw is actually doing a good job. If he wasn’t then why are all the owners pissed at him for giving so much money to the players.”

“You’re right Gene.  You’ve done such a good job the NFL is on the brink of collapse because of all the exorbitant player salaries and bonuses. The players are guaranteed contracts, so they are paid long after their useful days to their teams. The owners are holding fire sales to dump salary, barely holding on to their franchises. There is no money to be made owning a professional football team!”

  • Stover’s public comments about Upshaw seem to have opened a door for bloggers to vent their frustrations about the union leader. Some bloggers went as far as to say that Upshaw is “incompetent scum” that should have been removed from his post a while ago.
  • Stover’s e-mail has created a ground swell of respect for the often overlooked place kicker. Bloggers thought Stover demonstrated courage, which isn’t traditionally associated with his on-field position.
