ISC Reports Narrow 1.2% Increase In Profit For Q1

ISC yesterday reported a 1.2% increase in profit for Q1 of FY '08 over the year-ago period, crediting "in large part a 'huge success' with February's 50th running of the Daytona 500," according to Barry Flynn of the Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL. The company earned $36.2M in the quarter ending February 29, up 1.1% from $35.8M in Q1 '07, and earnings per share climbed to $0.71, up 5.9% from $0.67 in the year-ago period. The higher growth rate in per-share earnings was "due to an aggressive share repurchase program the company has pursued." ISC Dir of Investor Relations Wes Harris said that the company "bought 2.8 million shares of its own stock" from December '06 to February '08. Additionally, ISC's revenue rose 1.5% to $56.1M from the year-earlier quarter. Harris said that ISC's "disastrously performing" Motorsports Authentics venture is "in a 'turnaround year' in which the company expects it to break even." Harris added that ISC "anticipates devoting [$5-10M] in capital spending to its joint venture development" Daytona Live (Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 4/10).

LATE TO THE GATE: NASCAR SCENE's Bob Pockrass reported ISC had "less-than-expected admission revenues from Martinsville Speedway two weeks ago and is anticipating a challenging environment for ticket sales the rest of the season." ISC COO John Saunders said that the company's "overall prerace ticket sales are behind in the 'high single-digits' from last year," adding that fans are "deciding later to buy tickets." Saunders: "Our trends right now are down." Saunders also said that ISC "might need to spend more in promotions and advertising." Pockrass reported Speedweeks at ISC's Daytona Int'l Speedway had "more than a [5%] increase in attendance for the 150-mile qualifying races and more than a 5[%] increase in combined attendance" for the Nationwide and Craftsman Truck Series events. ISC has "sold race entitlements for all but one Sprint Cup and two Nationwide races, compared with three Cup and two Nationwide races remaining a year ago." Meanwhile, ISC has "spent $1[M] in preparing for Kentucky Speedway's appeal of the track's antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR and ISC" (SCENEDAILY.com, 4/9).
