Seattle Mayor To Fight For Sonics Despite Failed Arena Plan

Seattle Mayor Confirms City Does Not Have
Funds To Pay For KeyArena Renovations
Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels yesterday vowed to "continue fighting to keep the Sonics in the city, despite the demise of a proposed $300[M] KeyArena expansion" by a group led by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, according to Jim Brunner of the SEATTLE TIMES. Nickels confirmed that the city of Seattle would "not find enough public money for the KeyArena project before the April 10 deadline set by Ballmer," whose group offered to pay $150M of the renovations. City officials had "hoped to have the arena plan in place" before the NBA BOG meeting April 17-18, when league owners will consider a proposal by Sonics Owner Clay Bennett to relocate the Sonics to Oklahoma City. While Ballmer's offer is now "officially off the table," Seattle developer Matt Griffin, part of Ballmer's group, said that the group "might still be a player in future talks to save NBA basketball for the region." However, Brunner notes Seattle's "immediate focus will turn to the federal lawsuit seeking to hold Sonics owners" to the remainder of their KeyArena lease, which expires in 2010. The trial, which is scheduled for around the time of the NBA Finals, "could prove an unwelcome distraction for the league." City Attorney Tom Carr said that his office "has subpoenaed NBA financial records and plans to depose NBA Commissioner David Stern or other league officials, along with Sonics owners" (SEATTLE TIMES, 4/9). In Seattle, Greg Johns reports the city "failed to successfully lobby the Legislature to open up another $75[M] in revenue streams from future King County restaurant and car-rental fees." The city is "sticking to its public stance that it'll fight Bennett and his Oklahoma City ownership group" in court, though a "favorable outcome there would still allow the Sonics to leave in two years and the city would remain saddled with a KeyArena debt of more than $26[M]" (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 4/9).

WHEN THE DUST CLEARS: Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban yesterday said that he "would vote against a Sonics' relocation to Oklahoma City, even it means he is the lone owner to support the Sonics remaining in Seattle." Cuban: "My preference is the Sonics stay in Seattle. My prejudice is against having a Dustbowl Division in this part of the country because I don't think in the big picture that helps the NBA and I think the bigger market helps the NBA." But Cuban said, "There could be information that sways me. If they come back and said the Oklahoma City index is 200 when it comes to watching the NBA on TNT or ABC, and no one in Seattle watches, then OK maybe there's information that goes beyond market size." Cuban added, "I'd love to see Steve Ballmer in the NBA. It would be phenomenal" (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 4/9).

JUST SAY NO: In Seattle, Art Thiel writes under the header, "No To Sonics Now The Mantra." When the NBA and Bennett "again come calling with an offer to settle the lawsuit over the KeyArena lease, just say no." Thiel: "Understand that two additional years is a long time to bleed, and a long time to grow a plan. ... What's to lose? The reality is the NBA isn't expanding domestically for years, nor will most sports fans here have the appetite for actively poaching another city's team" (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 4/9). Meanwhile, the SEATTLE TIMES' Percy Allen today publishes the first article in a five-part Times series titled "The Five Stages of Grief," which focus on the possibility of the Sonics moving. Allen writes under the header, "Denial: Is This End Of Our Sonics?" The other four parts are anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance (SEATTLE TIMES, 4/9).
