Successful St. Pete Grand Prix Gets Four-Year Extension

Tony George Calls Grand Prix Of
St. Petersburg Signature Event For IRL
The Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Sunday was "rewarded" with a four-year contract extension, according to John Oreovicz of ESPN.com. The event, "which features the Acura Sports Car Challenge for the American Le Mans Series as a co-headliner," will now stay in the area until 2013, "subject to City Council approval." In just four years, the event has become what IRL Founder Tony George calls "a signature event" for the IndyCar Series. Andretti Green Promotions (AGP) President Kevin Savoree said that attendance at this year's Honda Grand Prix race was "up 'dramatically' on Friday and Saturday and a record crowd was expected for Sunday's activities." IRL Commercial Division President Terry Angstadt: "We're very pleased with the development of the St. Petersburg race. There's great atmosphere and the crowds are huge. The AGP guys are smiling." Angstadt also "confirmed that IndyCar officials are exploring the possibility of opening the 2009 season at St. Petersburg." Homestead-Miami Speedway has hosted the opener since '01. George, however, was "hesitant to predict that St. Pete could become the IndyCar Series' first event annually." George: "Whether or not it could ever be an opener, I don't know. Probably not, but it's an important warm-weather event as we kick the season off. If you could have it as an opener, there would be a lot of energy around it."

GLASS HALF FULL: Oreovicz noted Friday's crowd alone "appeared larger than the combined total for the two-day IndyCar opening weekend at Homestead, which was estimated as the largest ever for an IRL race" at the track. Improved attendance and an IRL record TV rating for ESPN2's broadcast of the Homestead race have George "feeling optimistic about the post-unification era" of open-wheel racing. George: "So far it's meeting my expectations." Meanwhile, an IndyCar insider said that the league is "close to reaching an agreement to extend Honda's involvement, which significantly leaves the door open for competing engine manufacturers to join" (ESPN.com, 4/7).

NEXT GREAT HOPE? In L.A., Jim Peltz writes after one race the IRL "achieved what it sought by reunifying the U.S. open-wheel racing circuit." Nineteen-year-old driver Graham Rahal won Sunday's race, and a successful Rahal "might further help restore the sport's popularity with the type of name recognition for an American driver that NASCAR stock car racing exploits so successfully" (L.A. TIMES, 4/8).
