Omaha Reaches Agreement On Downtown Ballpark For CWS

Agreement Reached For Omaha Ballpark
Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey and Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority (MECA) Chair David Sokol Tuesday "struck an agreement" on a new downtown ballpark that would replace Rosenblatt Stadium as host of the College World Series, according to Kotok & Sloan of the OMAHA WORLD-HERALD. NCAA Managing Dir of PR & Media Relations Bob Williams: "We see it as a hugely positive sign." Former Mayor and MECA member Hal Daub said that he will "reserve final judgment until he has reviewed all the materials but has a number of questions about the financing for the $140[M] project." Omaha City Councilman Garry Gernandt, who is a member of the Save Rosenblatt group, said that he will "continue to oppose the downtown ballpark plan." Gernandt: "I'm disappointed, but I'm not going to surrender." Omaha officials will travel to Indianapolis on April 21 to meet with the NCAA. With MECA's backing, the city and College World Series of Omaha Inc. "would be in a strong position to gain a preliminary agreement for a new CWS contract." Omaha has hosted the CWS since '50, "but the current contract expires" after the 2010 series. To reach the ballpark deal, the city gave ground on two issues: it "gave up the authority to develop the remaining convention center and arena parking lots without the permission and involvement of MECA;" and MECA "gained the right to develop" the site that would be used "temporarily as a parking lot but eventually would be developed into a full-service convention hotel" (OMAHA WORLD-HERALD, 4/2).
