MLS Galaxy MF DAVID BECKHAM appeared on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” last night and said of a billboard in L.A. that features him in his underwear for Armani: “I’ve never actually done photo shoots in my underwear. I was quite nervous because, obviously, I knew that my wife and friends were going to see it, but my mum is going to see it.” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 4/1).

L.A. FUN: In Boston, gossip columnists Fee & Raposa report Red Sox Owner JOHN HENRY and friends last weekend while in L.A. for the Red Sox-Dodgers exhibition games, "partied at the Playboy Mansion." Henry's group then ate dinner at Beso, where they were served by actress EVA LONGORIA-PARKER, who opened the restaurant in partnership with chef TODD ENGLISH. Meanwhile, the makers of "Inside the Monster," a pilot TV show about Red Sox fans, today will film fans at J.A. Stats during the Red Sox-A's game (BOSTON HERALD, 4/2).

 
AWARDS & RECOGNITION: L.A. Times columnist BILL PLASCHKE won the APSE's sports column writing category in the over-250,000 circulation division for the third time in four years. Winners in other divisions include: The Seattle Post-Intelligencer's TED MILLER (100,000-250,000); Florida Today's PETER KERASOTIS (40,000-100,000); and the Decatur Daily's MARK EDWARDS (40,000 and under) (APSE)....CFL sources said that the following former players will be enshrined in '08 into the CFL HOF: DOUG FLUTIE, MIKE PRINGLE, MICHAEL CLEMONS, JOHN BONK and TOM SHEPPARD (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 4/1).

NAMES: Former MLBer LENNY DYKSTRA last night hosted the launch party of his new magazine, "Players Club." The magazine's premier issue features Yankees SS DEREK JETER on the cover, lists Dykstra as its Founder and includes the magazine's slogan, "Keep Living the Dream" (N.Y. POST, 4/2)....The Philadelphia Tribune's DONALD HUNT is leading a "grass-roots effort" to get Pro Basketball HOFer WILT CHAMBERLAIN commemorated on a U.S. postage stamp. The effort needs approval from postal officials (USA TODAY, 4/2)....Former Univ. of Notre Dame football player DANIEL "RUDY" RUETTIGER has launched a sports drink, available at RudyNutrition.com (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 4/1).
