NFL Owners Meetings: Defense To Get Radio Communication

NFL owners yesterday at their annual meetings in Palm Beach approved by a 25-7 vote a proposal for defensive players to have radio contact with coaches through their helmets, according to Mark Maske of the WASHINGTON POST. The league's Competition Committee this year modified the proposal, after it "narrowly" missed the 24 required votes the previous two years. The new rule allows a "second defensive player to have his helmet outfitted with the communication device, to be used only when the originally designated player is not in the game." Also, a proposal by the Chiefs to restrict players' hair length was shelved until the next owners meetings in May. The owners today will vote on "other prospective rule changes," including possibly restructuring the playoff seeding format. Additionally, an NFL rep said that "one of the officiating points of emphasis for next season will be enforcement of 'mutual respect' guidelines between players and game officials" (WASHINGTON POST, 4/2).

Edwards Discusses Reason For Chiefs
Proposing Restrictions On Hair Length
HAIR METAL: Chiefs coach Herm Edwards yesterday said of the hair-length proposal, "We are selling a product. And there are big companies that pay a lot of money to put their names on that stadium, in the stadium and anything else. You'd hate for those people to say, 'Hey, you know what? We ain't buying this.'" USA TODAY's Jarrett Bell notes a "potential sticking point" with the proposal is a clause in the CBA which states that "no player can be disciplined because of hair length or facial hair." Edwards: "We're not advocating guys cutting their hair. Just put it in a ponytail, put a rubber band around it" (USA TODAY, 4/2). More Edwards: "We always talk about protecting the shield and the image we want to have for the [NFL]. That’s a part of it, too. There’s a certain way we feel the uniform should be portrayed and that’s why we brought it up” (K.C. STAR, 4/2).

MEETING NOTES: ESPN.com's John Clayton reports the proposal to re-seed the playoffs did not receive the necessary 24 votes this morning and was tabled "to a later meeting, most likely May." Also, certain field goals now can be "reviewed by instant replay, including kicks that bounce off the uprights" (ESPN.com, 4/2)....The city of Houston yesterday made its official bid to host Super Bowl XLVI in 2012, joining Indianapolis and Glendale. Final bids are due May 9 and the owners will vote on the location at the May meetings (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 4/2).

POLL RESULTS: The majority of the 166 respondents to a SportsBusinessDaily.com poll voted that NBC had the better pair of primetime games during the NFL’s opening weekend, with Redskins-Giants on Thursday night and Bears-Colts on Sunday night. Just 22% of the voters said ESPN’s “MNF” doubleheader of Vikings-Packers and Broncos-Raiders was better than NBC’s games.
