NFL Owners News, Part II: Jones Considering Time-Share Tickets

Jones Says Cowboys Will Take Time-Share
Approach With Tickets At New Stadium
Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones last week said that the Cowboys for their new stadium "would be the first team in the NFL that would allow a group to share a ticket ... for a game," according to a source cited by Robert Wilonsky of the DALLAS OBSERVER. The source said that under the proposal, a group of people could purchase a single ticket, and once inside the stadium, the group could "take turns going into the game" (DALLASOBSERVER.com, 3/31). Cowboys Dir of Corporate Communications Brett Daniels: "This is not a program we have in place at this time." But in Ft. Worth, Ahles & Williams report the Cowboys and the North Texas bid committee in their pitch to the NFL to host the Super Bowl said that "20,000 fans will be able to buy tickets to standing-room-only party plazas outside each end zone, where the game will be shown on digital screens." Jones Monday at the NFL owners meetings in Palm Beach, Florida, said of the new stadium, "Some of the things we've done that create a real interesting factor, some of the special things -- the glass curtain wall, some of the stuff we're doing in the end zones ... create different ways to watch and be a part of the game" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 4/2).

WANING VALUE? The DALLAS BUSINESS JOURNAL's Dave Moore reports the Cowboys and the city of Arlington, "to insure their stadium debt," have hired MBIA Inc. and Ambac Financial Group (AFG). But Arlington and the Cowboys were "unaware that those companies were heavily exposed to subprime debt," as both MBIA and AFG have been "fending off challenges to their top-notch financial ratings, which reflect directly upon the quality of the stadium's debt in the marketplace." N.Y.-based Fitch Ratings, which rates companies and securities for their financial risk, "downgraded [AFG] from a AAA rating to AA." Moore notes it is "unclear exactly what the Cowboys' debt issues are drawing, in terms of interest rates, when they go to auction monthly." Bank of America, which takes the team to the market, declined comment. But AFG Managing Dir Mark Spinelli, who worked on the Cowboys deal, said, "Let's face it, the Cowboys' credit hasn't changed between December and January, and between January and February because they're still doing exceptionally well both on the field as a football team and even in their financials. The fundamentals behind the strength of the deal are still there" (DALLAS BUSINESS JOURNAL, 3/28 issue).
