Braves, Gwinnett County Reach Deal On Triple-A Ballpark

Braves Finalize Lease For Minor League
Ballpark In Nearby Gwinnett County
The Braves and Gwinnett County (GA) "sidestepped a disagreement over stadium naming rights to finalize a contract that will put" the Braves' Triple-A affiliate in a new stadium for the '09 season, according to Tim Tucker of the ATLANTA CONSTITUTION. The Braves "had sought -- and Gwinnett had resisted -- contract language that would have specifically allowed the team to block the county from selling naming rights to competitors of as many as 14 major Turner Field sponsors," such as Coca-Cola and Delta Airlines. However, that stipulation was "left out" of the final contract, which said both the Braves and the county "shall consult with each other and work in good faith" on the sale of naming rights. The deal also stipulates that the Braves have the "right to review and approve a naming rights deal -- provided such approval is not 'unreasonably withheld.'" Braves Exec VP/Business Operations Mike Plant said that there is a "'very small group' of companies for which it would be reasonable to withhold approval," though he would not name them. Plant added he does not expect a problem "given that there is a lot of opportunity out there" for deals that do not infringe on Turner Field sponsors. The contract calls for the Braves to receive $350,000 from a Gwinnett Convention & Visitors Bureau-negotiated naming rights deal and for the county to receive the rest. Tucker notes the county "needs to get top dollar to help pay debt on the ballpark." The Braves will pay $250,000 in annual rent, plus a $1 fee per ticket sold, and "aside from the naming rights deal and a 50-50 split of parking proceeds with the county, the Braves retain all revenue from games and other team events at the stadium" (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 4/2).
