Mosley Plans To Remain As FIA President Despite Sex Scandal

Mosley Vows To Remain FIA
President Despite Sex Scandal
FIA President Max Mosley yesterday said that he plans to remain in his role despite calls for him to resign because of his role in a sex scandal (AP, 4/1). Mosley, who on Sunday was alleged to have participated in a "Nazi-style" orgy by the tabloid News of the World, said that he spoke in German "during a sado-masochistic orgy with five prostitutes not because he was fantasising about being a Nazi but because several of the prostitutes involved were German speakers." In London, Ed Gorman reports Mosley is "going on the offensive" concerning the scandal. Mosley has spent hours with lawyers since the report assembling a case against the tabloid that "will centre on invasion of privacy and his belief that he was the victim of a set-up." While Mosley will not deny his participation in the orgy, he will "dispute the context in which it occurred." However, there is a "widespread revulsion at his behaviour, whether there was a Nazi connotation to it or not." Gorman notes the scandal has been "discussed at boardroom level in most of the big car manufacturers and there have been rumours that a statement from several of them calling for Mosley's resignation has been considered." The impression given by manufacturers and F1 teams is that people are "nervous about speaking out, fearing Mosley's wrath at a later date, should he remain in his post" (LONDON TIMES, 4/2).

REAX: ESPN's Tony Kornheiser, on the Mosley story:  "It might not be (a sports story), but it's a great story. You can't get enough of this. ... It's absolutely appalling. On the other hand, you can't wait to read about this when it gets in the paper. And if this guy holds onto his job for another 48 hours, I'm going to be stunned" ("PTI,'' ESPN, 4/1). NBC's Jay Leno said, "People in England are calling for (Mosley) to step down after video surfaced showing him in a sex orgy with five hookers at once. Five hookers at once! See, that shows you how strong the Euro is against the dollar. Our governors here can only afford one hooker. They get five. We have to do something about the economy!" ("The Tonight Show," NBC, 4/1).
