Slippery When Dry: NCAA Tried To Make On-Court Decal Rougher

NCAA To Review Use Of Decals
During Final Tournament Review Process
The large NCAA logo placed at mid-court at Raleigh’s RBC Center during the first weekend of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament was treated because of complaints that it was slippery, and NCAA Senior VP/Basketball & Business Strategies Greg Shaheen told THE DAILY late last week it was kept in place only after the teams involved “assessed the court condition and indicated it was acceptable for competition.” Even so, two Univ. of North Carolina (UNC) players slipped on the circular decal during its second-round game, prompting UNC coach Roy Williams to complain that the logos were “very slick” and say that it was “silly” to have them. Shaheen, responding to e-mailed questions, said logos were put in place for early-round games “to create as neutral a site as possible.” Shaheen wrote, “With the current large court logos that many teams are going to, covering the host logo is a more complicated process. In fact, the NCAA logo of that size has nothing to do with branding. Rather, it is to cover the host logo.” While all of the sites used during the tournament’s first weekend had one or more decals placed by the NCAA to cover various on-court logos, the only complaints came from the RBC Center, which had the largest decal of any site because of the size of the midcourt North Carolina State logo.

ROUGHING UP THE DECAL: The NCAA first heard complaints about the decal on March 21 during first-round games. NCAA committee and staff representatives met with the building staff and then with the teams during practice the next day. Shaheen: “The building treated it with a water and ammonia mix … and the decal seemed to ‘rough up’ or take on a more tactile feel. At the same time, the reality is it is a contrasting surface and we need to be mindful of that.” He added that after the tournament, the NCAA will review the use of the decals as part of its formal tournament review process. The decals were only used at first- and second-round sites. Shaheen noted beginning with the ‘07 tournament, “all courts at the regionals and Final Four have been custom-made Connor Flooring courts. As a result, for the balance of the championship there will be no decals” (THE DAILY).
